Discover Kangaroo Island’s natural attractions and iconic wildlife all year round.

Kangaroo Island is one of Australia’s most visited islands. With the wildlife, coastal views, and magnificent national park, the island is a nature lover’s paradise.

The best time of year to visit Kangaroo Island is during summer, so between December and February. The temperature average is about 24 degrees Celsius during the day, which is perfect for exploring. Summer is the best time of year to go swimming, surfing, and snorkelling.

However, you can visit Kangaroo Island all year round. You will still see beautiful landscapes, spot a variety of wildlife, and enjoy all nature has to offer on this slice of heaven. Here are a few differences you’ll get through the seasons of the year.

Autumn

Another great time of year to go to Kangaroo Island is autumn! April to May has warm days and cooler nights, and you can still go bushwalking, relax on the beach, and even go for a cool swim. During autumn there are plenty of birds to spot as well as tiger snakes, smaller lizards, and even the occasional goanna.

Winter

Between June and August is when you can warm up by the fire and enjoy the island with fewer visitors. Winter is the best time to see the waterfalls flowing fuller, heaps of birds and other wildlife. Most people enjoy going hiking during winter due to the cooler weather and pristine viewing conditions along the coast.

Spring

Welcoming the warmer weather again and the longer days, coming in spring means the wildflowers are blooming and you’re likely to encounter more wildlife. Especially around dusk, you’ll have a high chance of spotting some wallabies and kangaroos.

Here is a list of attractions you can do when you visit Kangaroo Island for your summer holidays.

Flinders Chase National Park

Flinders Chase has a lot to see from plants, heritage sites, wildlife, beaches, and more. You could spend a day walking through the national park and see multiple attractions.

Remarkable Rocks is one of the most well-known sites in Flinders Chase. These rocks have eroded over millions of years turning them into the unique shape we see them today.

Seal Bay

Over 500 sea lions call Seal Bay home. You can get close to them while they lounge on the sand, or you can walk along the boardwalk and spot them from above.

These sea lions love to sunbake on the sand, and they also love to be out in the water splashing about with each other.

Kangaroo Island Wildlife Park

This wildlife park gives you the opportunity to see a range of different animals and even interact with a few of them. Some animals you can get up and close to include koalas, kangaroos, and monkeys.

You will need about two to three days on Kangaroo Island to see the best parts of it. You can catch a short ferry or flight to get there or book a guided tour.
