So, you want to see Australia but don’t own a vehicle? Travelling by plane can just be too expensive and you don’t get to see what the land has to offer while in the air. Luckily you can travel around the country by bus! You can travel between states and territories and explore what your bucket list cities and towns have on offer.

These buses, usually referred to as a coaches, have seats which are more comfortable than your regular city bus. Keep in mind though, some of the trips between places can be very long. So plan ahead and do those longer journeys overnight if a night bus is available! This will give you time to sleep so you can keep most of the day to travel in your new location.

Greyhound Australia

Greyhound Australia is Australia’s only national coach network with over 180 stops across the country. These coaches offer free Wi-Fi, you can select your seat and there are USB ports to charge your devices while travelling.

Whimit Pass
To make things cheaper and easier for you, Greyhound Australia offers a Whimit Pass, allowing you to have unlimited access travelling on any of their routes. You can select a chosen amount of time you want your pass to last from 15 to 120 days. The cost varies depending on how many days in your pass.

Commuter Pass
Greyhound Australia also offers a Commuter Pass which allows you to travel between Sydney to Canberra, Brisbane to Toowoomba and then Cairns to Townsville. In total this pass allows a max of 25 trips within the max of 180 travel days.

Recommend routes around Australia

The beautiful coastline of Australia makes us for great road trip. The best way to do this through Greyhound is to start in Broome. From here go to Darwin. Then go from Darwin to Cairns, Cairns to Brisbane, Brisbane to Sydney, and eventually Sydney to Melbourne. Or you can do the trip starting from Melbourne!

Another route to see more of the inland of Australia is starting in Adelaide. From here you can go all the wat to Coober Pedy. From Coober Pedy go to Erldunda, Erldunda to Darwin, Darwin to Tennant Creek and then Tennant Creek to Mount Isa. Now you’re in Queensland! From here you can go to Townsville. From sunny Townsville the Greyhound will drop you off in Longreach, then it’s on to Longreach to Charleville, Charleville to Dalby and next is Dalby to Brisbane. From here you can go to some popular cities like Gold Coast, Byron Bay, Sydney and Melbourne.

It is best to set a lot of time aside to be able to travel around Australia, with at least four weeks to three months. These routes above are more recommend for a three month trip to see the most of Australia by bus. And if you have all the time in the world, you can travel for even a year!
