Everything You Need To Know About Shark Diving In Port Lincoln
Great white sharks are some of the most deadly sea creatures in the Australian animal kingdom. Imagine seeing one up close?
Take a journey to Neptune Island near Port Lincoln, to see these incredible creatures in their natural habitat. Here’s everything you need to prepare for your shark diving trip in Port Lincoln.
Go for a dip…with sharks
Visitors get the chance to go diving with sharks along this unique coastline. The best way to see sharks up close is to dive with them! Beasts of the ocean, sharks can reach up to 60 km an hour, and they have around 300 teeth. Except for humans, sharks have no predators. They live at the top of the oceanic food chain, and they live up to 30-40 years. Some even believe they live for up to 70 years.
A bucket list item
The only other places in the world where you can see sharks are in Mexico, South Africa and New Zealand. There is some shark-spotting in East Australia – but Port Lincoln is the only place in Australia that you can go diving with them. This makes it the ultimate bucket list item – after all, how often will you be face-to-face with a shark?
There’s something very humbling (and thrilling) about watching sharks glide through the ocean.
Although visitors are safe within the shell of a shark cage, being so close to Great White sharks gets the adrenaline pumping. And don’t worry – you don’t need any scuba diving experience to go cage diving.
Neptune Island
Neptune Island is a remote place that is teeming with marine life around its waters. It juts dramatically out of the ocean, resisting nature’s forceful winds.
Port Lincoln is known as the Seafood Capital of Australia due to its incredibly wide bay and influx of fishing every year. The area of Port Lincoln is likened to the Mediterranean, as it evenly strikes the balance of being warm and cold – the winters are cool, yet the summers are dry.
Will I see a shark?
If you dive with sharks during the height of their breeding season (April-July) you’re likely to see a shark. But as they are nomads of the sea, sharks will only come and say hello when they feel like it.
However, shark diving tours in the Neptune Islands are often accompanied by schools of dolphins, sea lion colonies, and the occasional whale. So even if you’re faced with a shark-less day, you’re still very likely to see other marine life!
What happens on the tour?
In the morning, everyone meets at the marina in Port Lincoln. This is normally followed by morning tea. The journey to Neptune Island takes about 2.5 hours.
Guides drop the cage into the water first and they will throw in a little bit of bait to lure the sharks into the area and compel them to swim around you. The bait throwing makes the experience more intense.
6 people at once enter the cage. Everyone will have a go getting into the water and observing the sharks from the protective cage. Marvel at these incredible beasts as they cut through the ocean in front of you, and make memories that last a lifetime.
What do I need to bring on a shark diving trip?
Just yourself, and like all other Aussie outdoor activities – wear sun protection.
