Kakadu National Park is the second-largest national park in Australia.

When you look at Kakadu National Park on a map, it’s easy to see that the National Park is enormous. It is 240 kilometres east of Darwin. Kakadu takes up a large part of Australia’s north.

How big is Kakadu?

Kakadu is just over 20,000 square kilometres. Just to put that into perspective, that’s around half the size of Switzerland!

While it’s not the largest national park in the country, it’s the second largest. The sheer size of Kakadu means that it is home to some diverse ecosystems.

Kakadu is full of archaeological wonder. The rocks here are ancient, and some of the rock artwork is 20,000 years old. Aboriginal history has been painted and recorded into the rock artwork there, preserving ancient traditions and capturing the essence of Dreamtime.

There are savannahs, floodplains as well as mudflats, waterfalls and forests.
