5 Day 4WD Kakadu & Litchfield Tour

Day 1 – Darwin to Kakadu National Park

This epic 5 Day Kakadu & Lichfield Tour sees you quickly enveloped in the full majesty of Australia’s Top End having left Darwin. You arrive first at the Mary River, whose year-round pools provide a vital habitat for the region’s wildlife, including its saltwater crocs, as you’ll no doubt discover on your Corroboree Billabong Wetland Cruise.

Entering Kakadu National Park, the wildlife spotting continues at Mamukala Wetlands, which has some of the Northern Territory’s best birding and makes for an ideal place to enjoy a picnic lunch.

Reaching the settlement of Jabiru, you’ll pop by Bowali Visitor Centre for the lowdown on the region’s geography and Aboriginal history before travelling to the Rock Art Site at Ubirr. You’ll be glad of your 4WD as you make the croc-lined passage of Cahills Crossing on the East Alligator River and end the day witnessing the sunset over the Nabob Floodplains.

Day 2 – Jim Jim or Twin Falls

The second day of your tour begins with an exclusive cultural experience led by Kakadu’s traditional guardians – members of the Bininj Aboriginal community. Then, with seasonal and cultural observations permitting, you’ll trek for around four kilometres to either Jim Jim Falls or Twin Falls. Two of the most charming and unforgettable of the region’s cascades, it’s here that you’ll enjoy your second picnic lunch of the tour.

The afternoon hours are dedicated to a visit to the Warradjan Aboriginal Cultural Centre. Created by the region’s Aboriginal communities themselves, it seeks to provide a greater understanding of the Aboriginal way of life through its display of artefacts, photographs and artworks together with stories told by elders from the community.

Day 3 – Kakadu National Park to Pine Creek

Day 3 begins with the chance to discover if everything you’ve heard about the Northern Territory’s legendary sunrises is true with an early morning visit to Nawurlandja Lookout followed by breakfast at Anbangbang Billabong.

It faces Burrungkuy (Nourlangie), an upthrust of sandstone from the Earth’s surface that’s home to some of the best rock art paintings ever found – the Anbangbang Gallery. Its images run on and off for 1.5 km, providing an extraordinary insight into Aboriginal culture from prehistoric times to the arrival of the first Europeans.

Views of the Kakadu Escarpment can then be had after a brief climb to Kunwarddewardde Lookout. You’ll head off-road by 4WD to Maguk (Barramundi Gorge) before ending the day with a 2 km hike amid the area’s stunning landscapes.

Day 4 – Pine Creek to Darwin

Leaving Kakadu National Park, one of the many highlights that await on day 4 is the trip to either Leliyn (Edith Falls) or Butterfly Gorge. Tumbling 175 m down a series of mesmeric cascades, Edith Falls makes for a very special addition to any tour. Butterfly Gorge has its own charms, thanks to its series of alluring croc-free pools.

Heading back towards your night’s rest stop in Darwin, you’ll also have the opportunity to pay your respects at Adelaide River War Cemetery. It became the final resting place of more than 400 personnel killed during the Second World War.

Day 5 – Litchfield National Park

The tour’s final day begins at Fogg Dam Conservation Reserve, whose observation platforms offer great vantage points for checking out all manner of bird, snake and croc species.

Continuing on to Litchfield National Park, the afternoon is devoted to further natural attractions. These include north-south orientated magnetic termite mounds rising 2 m above the ground.

You’ll also have the chance to admire some of the park’s many waterfalls, such as Tolmer Falls, whose crevices are used by rare ghost bats. Their natural pools are perhaps the finest places to swim anywhere in Australia and make for a great end to the day before your return to Darwin.
