If you’re looking for an outback experience or want to explore more of the Red Centre, Alice Springs is the best town to visit. It’s ideal to stay in Alice Springs for a few days if you plan to see other parts of central Australia.

Mount Conner

Mount Conner is about 500 million years old, and it was once part of a mountain range. It is another giant red rock like Uluru. The flat surface of Mount Conner has made it a little shorter than Uluru.

Olive Pink Botanic Garden

In the middle of the Red Centre lies a botanic garden in Alice Springs. The Olive Pink Botanic Garden opened to the public in 1985 and now there are over 600 Central Australian plants.

Throughout the year you can do birdwatching in the garden, spotting all kinds of birds.

Macdonnell Ranges

Expect hiking trails, waterholes, and outback adventures. You can go swimming in large waterholes like Ellery Creek Big Hole.

Or you can enjoy one of the walking tracks for an adventure. The walking trails can be anywhere from half an hour to four hours. Or there is the multi-day hiking trail which takes about 17 days!

Hot-air balloon

If you’re an early riser, perhaps going in a hot-air balloon to watch the sunrise sounds like the perfect activity for you. As the sunlight starts to reach the land, you’ll be able to see kangaroos, camels, and brumbies on the ground.

Ride a camel at sunset

Speaking of spotting camels at sunrise, you can even ride one at sunset. You’ll be riding a camel for about an hour, enjoying the sunset and seeing other wildlife on the ride.

Uluru

Even though Alice Springs and Uluru are part of the Red Centre, it takes just under five hours to reach Uluru. As you reach Uluru, there is a lot to do here. Obviously, you’ll be able to see the giant red rock itself and Kata Tjuta.

Alice Springs is a great rural town and perfect to stay for around three days to a week to see the town and nearby sites. The longer you stay the more day trips you can do to see the Red Centre. A great day trip from Alice Springs is Uluru at sunset. You’ll visit the Aboriginal Cultural Centre, and see Kata Tjuta before seeing Uluru at sunset.
