Guide To Alice Springs

Explore Alice Springs

Alice Springs is also known as "the Alice" or simply "Alice".  It’s good to spend a couple of days exploring this nice little country town. It’s got plenty of historic sites and lots of natural scenery. There’s also interesting places like the Alice Springs Reptile Centre, museums and aboriginal art galleries. If you give yourself a little time to check out what’s around you’ll be richly rewarded.

Out For An Adventure

When you are ready for some adventure there are some great camping tours. There’s a very popular three day trip that takes in Uluru, Uluṟu-Kata Tjuṯa National Park (The Olgas) and Kings Canyon. The night sky in the outback is a stunning star show which will make your camping adventure really memorable. During the day you’ll see fantastic landscape, take great photos and get in some good hiking. The Uluru tour is a 9 km walk around with caves and rock paintings and has lots of interesting things to check out. The Kata Tjuta tour is about a 7km hike up through the Valley of the Winds. At Kings Canyon there’s about 6.5 km hike up Heart Attack Hill and then around the Ring Wall where you can look down into the canyon - it’s just breath taking. There are lots of tour options to fit your schedule - 1,2,3,4 day tours. The 4 day tour option even begins and ends at the Ayers Rock Airport.

Big Night Out

Alice Springs has a great food scene where you can try camel, emu, kangaroo and lots of other unusual options.  Stand out bars are Monte’s Lounge and Epilogue Tapas Bar and Restaurant. Monte’s and Epilogue have regular live music nights for the talented local singers and musicians.

Some people have a perception of Alice Springs as a dangerous place and a couple of years ago that might have been true. Happily that is no longer the case. The social issues to do with alcohol have been turned around by an effective community strategy. So now you can confidently and safely visit Alice Springs and enjoy all the cool things it has on offer.

Temperature Extremes

You have to remember that Alice Springs does have extremes in temperature at certain times of the year. For example around Christmas temperatures will be well over 40 degrees during the day. It’s not that uncomfortable but you do need to take care to stay hydrated. During the middle of the year the days are pleasant but the night temperature will get down to zero. To handle the heat all the accommodation providers have pools to cool off in. There’s also a brand new Alice Springs Aquatic & Leisure Centre which has great pools and excellent water slides.

Indigenous Culture

Lots of people visit Alice Springs just to find out about the local indigenous culture and see some of the spectacular art work. There are galleries in the town run by indigenous people which sell the art from their own communities direct to the public. There is a one day trip the Aboriginal Dreamtime and Bushtucker Tour which takes in things like bush tucker and visits to community elders to hear some of the traditional stories and learn about traditional medicine.

Mid Year Events

From June to August there are a lot of events on in Alice Springs. There’s The Henley-on-Todd Regatta (also called the Todd River Race) which is a dry bed river raft race. This is a charity event where people run and carry their rafts with them. There’s also Alice Springsʼ Lasseters Camel Cup - just like a horse race but with camels. There are also rodeos at this time of year which are also great fun.
