Top things to see and do in Uluru

Though you won’t be able to see everything in one day, you can definitely see the highlights.

  • Uluru (Ayers Rock)

The main attraction in Uluru is the towering monolith itself. You simply can’t go to Uluru and not see the rock.

There are a few different ways to see Uluru. You can view it from a distance or you can get up close. There are also a few different walks that you can take around it. Which walk you take may depend on the amount of time you have or how long you feel like hiking.

The Uluru Base Walk is the longest walk since it winds around the entire landmark. It takes about 3.5 hours to complete the walk. A shorter walk is the Kuniya Walk, which is only 1 kilometre long and leads to the Mutitjulu Waterhole. Another great option is the Mala Walk, which takes about 1.5 hours to complete.

  • Kata Tjuta

Kata Tjuta is another famous rock formation just a short distance from Uluru. In fact, it is said that Kata Tjuta is part of the rock that forms Uluru. Rather than being a tall rock jutting out of the desert, Kata Tjuta is a collection of large boulders.

If you want to explore more of Kata Tjuta, the best walk is the Valley of the Winds walk. This is one of the more difficult hikes, so be sure to bring plenty of water to stay hydrated. The full circuit will take around 3 to 4 hours to complete and offers incredible views!

  • Aboriginal Arts and Cultural Centre

The Aboriginal Arts and Cultural Centre is where you can learn more about the local Indigenous community and the history of Uluru. There are also gorgeous works of art that were created locally. Here you can purchase art or other locally crafted items to bring home as souvenirs.

  • Catch the sunrise or sunset

Whether you are beginning your morning at Uluru or Kata Tjuta, you must catch the sunrise. Alternatively, you can watch the sunrise in one spot and the sunset in the other spot.

The perfect sunrise spot at Kata Tjuta is the dune viewing area. This lookout offers mesmerising views of the sunrise with Uluru in the distance. If you’re at Kata Tjuta at night, catch the sunset at the sunset viewing area.

If you’re viewing the sunrise at Uluru, take a drive to Talinguru Nyakunytjaku for unparalleled scenery. The perfect sunset viewing spot is at the Uluru car sunset viewing area or any of the other lookouts.
