Things to do in the Hunter Valley

There is plenty to see and do in the Hunter Valley, aside from enjoying a tasting at one of the region’s celebrated wineries.

But, before we get on to them, let’s talk about the Hunter Valley’s superb vino and the best way to enjoy it.

Wine tasting in the Hunter Valley

The Hunter Valley is home to some of Australia’s most celebrated wineries, with each one offering delightful cellar door experiences for tasting their drops alongside quality local produce. There are a number of ways in which you can experience their top wineries, from private tours to shuttle buses and, of course, taking along your own designated driver.

Be sure to head to McGuigan Wines, Gartelmann Wines, Iron Gate Estate and Savannah Estate, where you can try fabulous Shirazs, Semillons, Chardonnays, Merlots and more.

Refresh your senses on a sunrise hot air balloon ride

Okay, maybe this isn’t for the post-cellar door, heavy headed people (or it could be just what they need!), but a sunrise hot air balloon ride over the Hunter Valley is an incredibly magical experience and one that shouldn’t be deterred by a hangover. It is truly the best way to see the valley’s stunning hills and rolling vineyards before getting out and about to enjoy the fruits of their labour.

Try fantastic local produce

Anywhere there is fine wine there is fine food, right? Well, this rings true of the Hunter Valley, world famous for producing some of the country’s very best produce. You can sample the region’s amazing offerings pretty much wherever you go, but one of the best ways to enjoy the local produce is through a private cooking class. There are pizza making classes, candy making classes and even Spanish Paella making classes, perfect to enjoy with a glass of Hunter Valley Chardonnay and a cheeky glass of sangria.

Saddle up for a horseback ride

If you’re not too keen on seeing the Hunter Valley from air, you can saddle up for a horseback tour that traverses the region’s gorgeous hills and rustic bushland, making another interesting way to experience this incredibly picturesque part of the world.
