Melbourne
You may have heard it all before, but only because it’s true: Melbourne is, without a shadow of a doubt, the cultural hub of Australia.
Things to do in Melbourne
The city is awash with charming laneways, gorgeous gardens, diverse musical options and a sporting event for every month of the year.
Not only that, but Melbourne is an awesome jumping spot for some of the country’s most awe-inspiring natural attractions. All you have to do is head an hour or two in any direction from the city and you will find yourself amongst rugged coastline, magical forests and cascading waterfalls.
So what are some things to do in, and just outside, of Melbourne?
Go to the footy
Melbourne is the home of Australian Rules Football (AFL), and whenever we have an international guest visit (in the winter months), the first thing we do is take them to a footy. Be sure to snap up tickets to a big game where you can really soak up the riotous atmosphere in the stadium.
See a gig
Melbourne is one of the world’s most multicultural cities. This means that our musical culture has evolved from the days of Acca Dacca down at the Sandbelt. On any weekend night you can catch a punk gig at eight before heading over for a salsa show at 10. Melbourne’s music scene is as diverse as its people, and there truly is a genre and dance for any visitor.
Check out a festival
One of the great things about visiting Melbourne is getting to take in a festival. Melbourne is a fun-lover’s city, with art, comedy, food and music festivals taking place throughout the year. If you’re here in summer be sure to get down to a music festival; in April we have the Comedy Fest; and we have food events celebrating our region’s incredible produce taking place throughout the year.
Head out to nature
Non-Melburnians often see our natural outposts as afterthoughts, places that don’t hold a candle to Sydney’s Blue Mountains or Darwin’s Kakadu National Park. However, Melbourne’s nearby natural landmarks are as incredible as the city itself, with locations like the Otway Ranges and Grampians National Park providing some of the most serene natural wonder in this part of the country.
These are just a select few of the unforgettable things you can do in Melbourne, with honorable mentions including:
- National Gallery of Victoria
- Yarra Valley Balloon Flights
- Eureka Skydeck
- Queen Victoria Market
- Musicals
And so on and so forth. Enjoy yourself.
