Litchfield National Park is home to some of Australia’s most stunning waterfalls, so it’s understandable that you want to squeeze it into your itinerary.

Litchfield is about an hour’s drive from Darwin in the Northern Territory. There is a lot to see while you’re in Litchfield, so you will likely need more than a day to see the national park. Anywhere between two to three days are more ideal to do some swimming holes, hiking trails, and see other Litchfield highlights.

However, if you do only have one spare day to see Litchfield, you can still do a quick day trip out and have a jam-packed schedule to see as much as possible – or just one or two landmarks.

What can I see of Litchfield in a day?

Litchfield has some of the most incredible waterfalls, swimming holes, and natural wonders close to Darwin. But when you’re on limited time, here are some of the best attractions you should check out during your day visit.

Termite Mounds

Termite Mounds may sound a bit dull, but these ones are between two to four metres high!

The Magnetic Termite Mounds are up to 100 years old and are around two metres high, while the Cathedral Termite Mounds are the taller ones at four metres.

You can walk along the boardwalk to see these mounds and stop at the information shelter to learn more about them.

Wangi Falls

Wangi Falls is a large deep pool in Litchfield where you can swim right up to the falls.

Keep in mind that the falls are only open in the dry season (May to October) as saltwater crocodiles can be spotted in the area in the wet season.

Tolmer Falls

Tolmer Falls is one of the most beautiful and largest waterfalls you can see in Litchfield. You can’t swim at Tolmer Falls, but there are two viewing platforms to check out the view of the falls.

Florence Falls

Florence Falls is another popular swimming hole, and you can swim here all year round.

There is a shallow rocky area where you can lounge in, or you can go further towards the falls where the water is deeper.

Buley Rockhole

Buley Rockhole is one of the more popular plunge pools in Litchfield. With a deeper plunge pool and shallow rock pools to lounge in, you’re sure to find your ideal spot.

Buley Rockhole is a great place to end your day exploring the national park. You can unwind and relax in the cool water after walking around in the heat all day.

Litchfield National Park is a beautiful national park where you can spend the full day exploring. If you would rather join a tour, you can book a one-day tour here. The tour will go to some of the waterfalls and plunge pools listed above, and you’ll see the giant termite mounds. Additionally, the one-day tour also stops by Adelaide River for the Jumping Crocodile Cruise!
