One thing that makes Hobart even better is the myriad of free things you can do in and around town, with the likes of the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens, Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery and the world famous Salamanca Market all able to be enjoyed without (technically) dropping a buck!

So, what are some of these unforgettable free Hobart adventures? Let’s take a look below:

The Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens

Aussies may find this hard to imagine, but many botanical gardens across the world require an entry fee just to experience their beauty. But not here, and the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens is a sublime example of why it’s so awesome our gardens are free!

Head there on a sunny day and enjoy the Conservatory, Subantarctic Plant House and everyone’s favourite lily pond – it’s an incredibly tranquil joy and easily one of the best cost-free experiences in the town.

Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery

Okay, so it may not carry the same infamy as MONA, which is only free for Tasmanians if they put a deposit down, but the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery, or TMAG, is a beautiful place to experience some stellar artworks.

The gallery, which doubles as a beautiful building in its own right, houses a number of incredible permanent and rotating exhibitions, making it a delight to show up to at any time of the year and experience something new.

The Salamanca Market

Okay, it’s free to enter the Salamanca Market, but we dare you to try and walk from one end to the other without trying the famous scallop pie, a glass of freshly brewed ginger beer or picking up a gorgeous artisanal craft to gift to someone back home. Of course, you don’t have to buy anything, but you will have a pretty hard time avoiding it!

Climb to the top of Mount Wellington

If you head up on a nice day you will have little trouble taking in the incredible views of Hobart and the Derwent River. What’s more, Mount Wellington’s peak is pretty beautiful in its own right, with a range of bush walks adding to the experience of heading up top!
