Byron is one of Australia’s most famous surf beach towns. During the warmer months it overflows with tourists on their summer holidays. It’s quieter during the winter months when it’s just the locals and some passing through backpackers.

Hit The Surf

The surfing is fabulous in Byron. It’s easy to hire a board or book a surf lesson. The town is right on the beach so it’s so simple to tumble out of bed and hit the water.

Take A Tour

If you are surfed out there’s some great day trips from Byron. The most popular is a day trip to the township of Nimbin which is one of Australia’s most famous alternative hippy towns. They have their own Hemp Embassy and a museum showcasing Kombi culture. On the third and fifth Sundays of each month, Nimbin Community Market is held in the school grounds in Nimbin. You’ll can hunt yourself some very cool handmade clothes and jewellery here.

There’s some excellent kayaking options in Byron where you can get up close and personal with dolphins, turtles and whales. The tours are run by trained life savers. If you don’t happen to see some amazing wildlife you will get to go on that tour again for free.

The peak whale watching season is in winter when  boats taking out groups of 12 to see the whales and their big splashy business.

If you are interested in learning about the indigenous traditions of this area there are tours where you can learn about local indigenous stories and sacred places from the traditional land owners.

If you are a bit of a thrill seeker will a little bit of cash there are some great sky diving and paragliding on offer around Byron Bay.

All the pubs have back packer VIP Nights deals – free entry, drink, entertainment. Gig guides go up on Thursday and you can plan your night entertainment. There are three most popular clubs in Byron Bay – Cheeky Monkeys, Woody’s and Coco Mangoes.

Let’s Eat

Cheeky Monkeys is famous for their $5 meals from 7pm. They are a backpacker focused restaurant and nightclub, with cheap meals, table top dancing, competitions and different themed nights. You’ll also find that some of the hostels have $5 and $10 barbecue nights so it’s pretty easy to eat on a budget.
