Cairns has a tropical climate and is considered one of Australia’s most laid-back cities, where you can enjoy the outdoors. One of the best times to visit the tropical city is during the dry season between June and August, as these are the few months when it’s very unlikely to rain. The weather is still warm but not as humid. The dry season also helps you avoid major storms and possible cyclones.

Things to do

Great Barrier Reef

The best time to go snorkelling and diving in the Great Barrier Reef is during the dry season! With minimal rainfall, the underwater visibility is exceptional, making it easy to see all the sea creatures and coral.

Daintree Rainforest

Another highlight, a two hour drive from Cairns, is the Daintree Rainforest, which is the oldest rainforest in the world! The waterfalls are best seen during the wet season, but it’s still worth visiting the rainforest during your trip. The rainforest offers much to see, including the beautiful town of Cape Tribulation.

The Esplanade

The Esplanade is the perfect spot to spend an afternoon by the water. Sit by the ocean and enjoy a picnic near Muddy’s Playground and Cafe or cool off at the Cairns Esplanade Lagoon. The Lagoon is a swimming area that is free of crocs and jellyfish! The Esplanade is also home to numerous delicious restaurants where you can enjoy a mouth-watering meal.

Kuranda

A lush, green mountain village close to Cairns is Kuranda! This picturesque town is known for its famous scenic railway and Skyrail. You can spend a day exploring the town and experiencing the railway and Skyrail! Book online to secure the date and time that suits you best.

Cairns Botanic Gardens

With minimal rainfall, you can enjoy a picnic and leisurely walks around the Cairns Botanic Gardens. This botanic garden is filled with tropical plants and is also known as one of the best exhibits in Australia for tropical flora. The gardens are great all year round as different flowers and plants bloom at various times throughout the year.

If you’ve already booked your holiday during the wet season, Cairns is still a fantastic destination to visit. You might be lucky to witness some dramatic storms passing through the city. However, if you’re still planning, anywhere between June and August is your best time!
