Airlie Beach being the central spot on the mainland. Known for the pristine turquoise waters, pure white silica sand beaches, incredible marine life and vibrant reef. The Whitsundays are worth a visit just about any time of the year.

Most places around Australia thrive in certain months, but The Whitsundays is unique. It remains travel-worthy year-round. There are several factors that could help determining when you should book your flights.

The Whitsundays wet season

Much of the northern area of Australia stays warm throughout the year. Rather than the traditional seasons, it’s simply the wet and dry season. Wet season refers to the time of year where more rainfall is expected. This leads to more humid temperatures, but also thriving forests and stunning greenery.

The wet season in The Whitsundays is during the summer months of January to March. The location of the islands means the weather changes quickly. You’ll more than likely still get some fabulous – albeit a little humid – sunny days. The wet season has some serious perks – you’ll find accommodation is more affordable during this time, and generally not as busy with crowds.

So, while the rain and humidity may not be ideal for some, the wet season is actually a great time to visit The Whitsundays. You could score yourself a serious bargain. Tours run year-round as conditions are still fantastic for exploring the area.

If you do find yourself here with a rainy day, you’ll still have plenty to do. If you’re not worried about getting wet, a hike through lush rainforests as it rains around you is magic, or you can explore the huge indoor/outdoor aquarium at Daydream Island. Alternatively, join a tour or cruise to Hamilton Island and settle in at one of the islands many incredible restaurants and enjoy a lovely meal.

Winter in The Whitsundays.

If you can even call it that. April through to August sees average daily temperatures around 22 degrees, and the water temperature stays pleasant. This is a beautiful time to visit and enjoy sunny, calm days out on the water. You can sail in these near-perfect conditions, hike, go whale watching, snorkel and scuba dive.

The *actual* best time to visit the Whitsundays?

Drum roll please…

Whilst we now know any time is a good time to holiday here, September is universally regarded as the best time to visit The Whitsundays. The days are filled with sunshine, the stingers haven’t made their way down yet, the water is warm, plus there is very low rainfall and low humidity – so we can’t say we blame you for wanting to visit in September. As this is the best month weather-wise, it’s also the most popular with travellers from Australia and around the world, so accommodation and flights may be a little more expensive. Book tours well in advance to avoid missing out on any cruise or experience you’re wanting to do.

A quick note on Stinger Season:

If you’re travelling to The Whitsunday’s from October through to May, you’ll still have the enviable warm weather and water, but this is stinger season! You’ll have access to stinger suits, and while they may not be the most flattering attire, you’ll be better protected from the venomous jellyfish that live in the waters during this time. Stingers range in size, but they can be very harmful to humans. Be alert, wear your stinger suit if going in the water, and listen to the experts. If you’re a little apprehensive about the ocean during these months, head to the free lagoon in Airlie Beach for a stress-free swim!

With an average year-round temperature of 27.5 degrees, we are confident that whenever you do make it to the paradise of The Whitsundays, you will be swept away in a memorable trip. Made up of sunshine, snorkeling and possibly a few poolside cocktails.
