Guide To Tasmania

The stand out attraction of Hobart is Mona – which is the museum of old and new art. It attracts visitors from all over the world. Many think it is the coolest art gallery in Australia. The owner David Walsh once described the museum as a “subversive adult Disneyland” – doesn’t that sound like fun!

Salamanca Market is on every Saturday. These markets are possibly the best outdoor markets in Australia. They have a great combination of food and local produce and craft. Hobart also has the Farm Gate Market on Sundays. It’s a farmer’s market and it runs from 9am to 1pm.

Climb A Mountain

It is well worth a trip up Mount Wellington for a view over the city. There’s a couple of different ways to get there. There’s a shuttle bus. One of the backpackers hostels offers a free shuttle bus up a couple of days a week. There’s also another shuttle bus that you can pay to go up on. You can also catch a public bus up and walk. There’s also lots of good walking tracks up there if hiking is your thing.

Mountain Biking

There’s really good mountain biking opportunities in Hobart.The North-South Track is considered a great mountain bike trail.

The Waterfront

The waterfront is where it’s all happening in Hobart. It’s jumping with bars, cafes, restaurants and great places to look out over the water.

Get Some Culture

If you are into the arts or just curious it is worth a visit to theTasmanian Museum and Art Gallery, which is free.

Where To Eat

Shamrock Hotel offers a ten dollar menu for dinner each night. There’s also great fish and chips from any of the fish shops down at the docks. Some say Fish Frenzy has the best fish and chips in Australia. The North Hobart restaurant strip has restaurants from all over the world so you’ll have lots of choice.

Where To Party

Most of the good places to party are down at the waterfront. We’d recommend you check out places like Jack Greene, Cargo Bar and Grape. The Telegraph puts on ten dollar Steins on a Friday night. I think they have round-the-clock Steins on a Wednesday. Rektango is worth a visit on Friday nights.

If you want to go dancing try the Observatory Nightclub or Mobius. There’s also Irish Murphy’s and BarCelona. The Republic Bar has great live music, and that’s where most of the bands come down and play. It’s in North Hobart. Creatures, which is just behind Salamanca, is a good place to go for a beer on a sunny Sunday afternoon.

Best Times To Visit

From Christmas time through to the end of January, there’s lots of events on. The Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race creates a lot of excitement. There’s the Taste of Tasmania Festival. There’s also Falls Festival held at Marion Bay, which is about 40 minutes away. There’s Mona Foma festival in the middle of January.

If you are into sport, there’s the Hobart International, which is Women’s Tennis. There’s cricket at at Bellerive Oval or Blundestone Arena with the Big Bash and also other International matches of cricket. There is so much on in January. A bit later there’s the Wooden Boat Festival at the start of February which is held every second year. Toward the end of the year the Tasmanian International Beerfest is held in November.

Winter Fun

Winter doesn’t have to be boring. Dark Mofo is on around the time of the Winter solstice. This is a celebration of the dark with light, sound, large-scale public art and music.

Hobart Is A Good Base

Hobart is also a really good base for day trips, whether it be to Port ArthurBruny Island, or down the Hidden Valley. Book yourself 4-5 days and use Hobart as a base to see the city and then explore some other parts of Southern Tasmania.
