Melbourne to cairns tour itinerary

Day 1 - Melbourne

Arrive in Melbourne at any time, check-in to your hostel and most likely recover from your long flight or if you have the energy go out and explore at your own leisure!

Day 2 - Melbourne

Today is a free day to explore Melbourne at your own leisure.

Day 3 - The Great Ocean Road  (Lunch)

Learn the history of the great ocean road while marvelling at the coastline. You will visit Loch Ard Gorge,  see the famous 12 Apostles and more on this great day tour.

Day 4 - Melbourne

Today is a free day to explore Melbourne at your own leisure.

Day 5 - Phillip Island Tour (Lunch)

Phillip Island day tour is a great opportunity to learn more about Austrian wildlife while visiting a conservation park, different lookout and the famous penguin parade.

*Tour itinerary may vary slightly due to weather.

Day 6 - Melbourne to Sydney

Today you have free time to explore Melbourne before taking an overnight bus to Sydney (or you can drive to Sydney this day if self-driving).

Day 7 - Sydney

Arrive in Sydney early in the morning, the rest of the day is free to explore at your leisure.

Day 8 - Blue mountains tour (Lunch)

You will have the chance to see the Featherdale Wildlife Park, the Blue Mountains National Park, Wentworth Falls the Three Sisters and more!

*a medium level of fitness is required to join this trip

Day 9 - Sydney

Today is a free day to explore Sydney at your own leisure

Day 10 -  Sydney to Spot X Surf Camp 

Enjoy a full day in Sydney before hopping on an overnight bus to Spot X Surf Camp.

Day 11 - Spot X Surf Camp (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Arrive and begin learning to Surf at Spot X Surf Camp.

Day 12 - Spot X Surf Camp (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Continue learning to Surf!

Day 13 - Spot X to Byron Bay

Travel to Byron Bay, it is now time to relax!!!

Day 14 - Byron Bay

More relaxing on the beach! If you want you can hire a surfboard, go on a kayak tour to see the dolphins or visit Nimbin (extra cost).

Day 15 - Byron Bay

Keep relaxing on the beach! If you want you can hire a surfboard, go on a kayak tour to see the dolphins or visit Nimbin (extra cost).

Day 16 - Byron Bay to Surfers Paradise

Check out of your hostel and make your way to Surfers Paradise where you will spend 3 nights.

Day 17 - Surfers Paradise

Today is yours to explore at your own leisure. We suggest visiting theme parks or the beach!

Day 18 - Surfers Paradise

Day 19 - Surfers Paradise to Brisbane

Travel to Brisbane and spend the afternoon exploring.

Day 20 - Brisbane

Explore Brisbane City!

Day 21 - Brisbane to Noosa

Travel to Noosa and hit the beach!

Day 22 - Noosa

Chill in Noosa.

Day 23 - Noosa

Get your tan on at the beach in Noosa!!

Day 24 - Noosa to Rainbow Beach

Travel to Rainbow Beach, you have a safety briefing at 4:00pm for your Fraser Island tour.

Day 25 - Fraser Island (Lunch, Dinner)

Today you begin your Fraser Island tour! The morning of departure is a pretty hectic time, with excitement everywhere, we will again split you up into your groups and ask you to work together in checking off all your food to make sure it is all there before you go. You will pack your food into the eskies, alcohol into cool boxes, do a full vehicle inspection including checking all camping and cooking equipment is provided and then do a full driver briefing outlining the most important aspects of driving on soft sand and how to use the gears. Then it’s off you go!!

Day 26 - Fraser Island (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Due to tide times and changing conditions, the itinerary of the tour will forever change in terms of where you go, on what days but know that the experience of the lead driver will ensure you get to see the most important and beautiful sights on Fraser Island. Some of these should include Lake McKenzie, Lake Wabby, Eli Creek, Champagne Pool, Indian Head and The Maheno Shipwreck to name but a few. You will only set up camp the one time and travel back to this area every evening so you can sit down, relax with a drink and cook your evening meals without the hassles of having to relocate every time.

Day 27 - Fraser Island (Breakfast, Lunch)

Due to tide times and changing conditions, the itinerary of the tour will forever change in terms of where you go, on what days but know that the experience of the lead driver will ensure you get to see the most important and beautiful sights on Fraser Island. Some of these should include Lake McKenzie, Lake Wabby, Eli Creek, Champagne Pool, Indian Head and The Maheno Shipwreck to name but a few. You will only set up camp the one time and travel back to this area every evening so you can sit down, relax with a drink and cook your evening meals without the hassles of having to relocate every time.

On the third and final day, you will arrive back into Rainbow Beach approximately around 4:00pm (depending on tides).

Day 28 - 1770/Agnes Water

Travel to 1770 and chill out.

Day 29 - Motorbike Tour with Scooteroo 

Check-in at Southern Cross Backpackers to start your quick training before to get on your bike. Hit the country roads around Agnes Water and see kangaroos in the wild. Watch the start of the sunset and cruise back to enjoy a fun night with newfound friends!

Day 30 - 1770/Agnes Water to Airlie beach

Checkout of the hostel and relax on the beach before your departure to Airlie Beach.

(We suggest you choose an overnight bus to Airlie Beach to save on accommodation and time)

Day 31 - Airlie Beach

Arrive in Airlie Beach, chill at the Airlie Beach lagoon. Check-in for your Whitsundays tour.

Day 32 - The Whitsundays (Dinner)

Begin 2 days 2 nights Whitsundays sailing. Click the 'Whitsunday Boat Options' tab to check out the boats and their itineraries.

Day 33 - The Whitsundays (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Whitsundays sailing!

Day 34 - Return to Airlie Beach (Breakfast)

Return to Airlie Beach this day and celebrate being back on land.

Day 35 - Airlie Beach to Magnetic Island 

Travel to Townsville and catch the ferry to Magnetic Island. This includes the ferry return, 2 nights of accommodation, 1 breakfast, 1 dinner, 1 complimentary drink.

Day 36 - Magnetic Island 

The second day on Magnetic Island. You can relax, go snorkelling or visit the Koala Sanctuary.

Day 37 - Magnetic Island to Cairns

Ferry to Townsville, travel to Cairns where you will spend the next 4 nights in a hostel.

Day 38 - Great Barrier Reef (Lunch)

Day cruise on the Great Barrier Reef with snorkelling and lunch included.

Day 39 - Cairns

Free day in Cairns to do as you please!

Day 40 - Atherton Tablelands (Lunch)

1 day tour to the Atherton Tablelands. Bring your swimming gear as you will visit loads of waterfalls and waterslides through the magnificent rainforest.

Day 41 - Trip Complete!

You are free to travel onwards at anytime this day.

A: No, This is a combination of accommodation and separate tours that we organise for you. You need to choose how you travel between your destinations whether by bus or driving. You can then choose to have open dated tickets or select a starting date and we’ll organise everything and send you an itinerary!

Q: Can I change anything?

A: Of course, just call or email us and we can organise a custom package in no time and set you on your adventure.

Q: Will I meet lots of people this way?

A: Definitely, this is the most popular way of travelling and experiencing Australia’s East Coast, so no matter if you’re on tour or on a bus or in a hostel you’ll make lots of new friends.

Q: What’s the difference between Greyhound and Premier Buses?

A: Greyhound has new buses with Wi-Fi, USB plugs for charging devices and up to 3 departures per day, Premier has older buses with usually 1 departure a day.

Q: What accommodation will I be staying at? 

A: You will be staying in dorm rooms at the accommodation we book for you, we use accommodation that we know are awesome because we've been sending people there for years. If you would like to stay somewhere in particular just let us know and we will do our best to make it happen.
