If you don’t know much about Brisbane you’re not alone. Most travellers arrive without too many expectations and they usually find the city a bit of a pleasant surprise. There is a lot to do and you’ll find that Brisbane is friendlier, cheaper and more relaxed than the other cities. Many backpackers come to Brisbane to get seasonal work and a couple of the hostels have a job club to help match up employers with travellers wanting to earn some money.

Transport is no hassle in Brisbane. It’s easy to walk around Brisbane CBD and see South Bank, The Story Bridge and the Botanic Gardens. You can even get a free ferry ride on the river with the CityHopper. If you are staying more than a few days you can buy a go card which you can use on buses, trains and ferries.

Take A Tour

If there is one thing that people might have on their Brisbane to-do list it’s Steve Irwin’s Australia Zoo. This is an easy day trip from Brisbane. Another popular animal tour is Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary where you can cuddle up to one of the cute koalas and get your photo taken.

In Brisbane itself the XXXX Brewery Tour (pronounced Four Ex) is very popular. It’s an hour and a half tour and includes four beers. Another popular tour is the 1 or 2 day trips to Moreton Island. Most people have never heard of it but it’s the third largest sand island in the world. 98% of the island is a National Park. There are guided snorkelling tours around the wrecks and sandboarding or sand tobogganing. Tangalooma Resort on the island has heaps of fun activities for visitors.

If you are into bush walking you’ll love Springbrook National Park which is a day trip out of Brisbane. It has waterfalls and glow worm grottos. Brisbane is also a base for sky diving if you are up for thrills. The skydive tour leaves from Brisbane and includes tranfers to Byron Bay for the day.

If you have an afternoon to spare River Life will take you out on the Brisbane River for some fun on the river with kayaking, stand up paddle boarding and rock climbing.

Get Food

The Zi Bar and Down Under Bar and Grill in the city are the cheapest. The Grill has a $6 breakfast and $12 Steak and Pint deal. China Town in the Valley have excellent cheap noodle options. Sushi on Roma in Turbot St have fantastic cheap Japanese food.

Best Night Life

The Down Under Bar rocks every night of the week with theme nights, parties and cheap food and drink. You’ll find that the Valley comes to life on the week-ends with a lively night club and bar scene. If you are into a more alternative scene we recommend you check out West End which is better for live music. Guilty Rogue near Roma Street Station is great for Thursday nights. If dancing is your thing then head to the Valley on Saturday night and try The MET, Family or The Beat Megaclub.

Off To The Market

If you love food markets there’s a cool farmers market in the city just next to the Casino on Wednesdays. It’s also worth a visit to the Eat Street Markets on the river Friday, Saturday & Sunday. They have cool food stalls in shipping containers as well as live music. On Friday, Saturday and Sunday the South Bank Markets are worth checking out. For some cheap interesting food the West End markets are worth a visit on Saturdays.

Movie Night

The cheapest cinema in town are at South Bank with tickets only $9.

Make A Splash

If you are in town during the summer you must visit South Bank. It has a man made beach lagoon which is a fantastic spot to relax. There is always loads going on, heaps of places to eat and a great atmosphere.
