Cairns is famous for the reef, the rain forest and adrenalin adventures. We’d highly recommend you go to the outer parts of the Great Barrier Reef for either snorkelling or diving. There’s great day trip options and overnight trips. It takes about an hour and a half to get to the outer barrier reef and you spend usually around five hours there visiting two different reefs. These places are world famous so a reef visit is definitely something to put on your “must do” list.
Rain Forest Adventures
We’d also recommend visiting the rain forest. The most famous is the Daintree Rainforest which encompasses Cape Tribulation where the rain forest meets the reef. You can go there in one day. Highlights of the trip are seeing the scenic approach to the drive north of Cairns, doing a cruise on the Daintree River, looking for crocodiles and other wildlife, and then heading up into what is possibly the oldest living rain forest of it’s kind on the planet. You can also stay overnight or even spend the night sleeping out in the rain forest. There’s so many different activities you can do up there. Check out jungle surfing which is a canopy tour of the rain forest.
Get Yourself An Adrenalin Rush
If you like a bit of excitement you certainly are in the right place. Adrenalin producing fun is another thing that Cairns is famous for. Skydiving is very, very popular. Bungee jumping is also great fun. You can go white water rafting on the Tully River. You’ll do 44 rapids through the day and raft on the river for four hours; two hours in the morning, two in the afternoon and have a barbecue lunch on the riverbank.
Splash in Tableland Waterfalls
The other beautiful area of rain forest is up in the Atherton Tablelands. There’s very popular trips that explore the rain forest and the waterfalls in that area. Cape Tribulation is all about the coastal rain forest, the Atherton Tablelands and the valley below is all about swimming in the beautiful fresh water streams and the volcanic crater lakes on the Tablelands. These areas are a mixture of rain forest and farm land.
Free Fun on The Esplanade
You don’t have to be cashed up to have fun. There’s lots of free things to do around Cairns as well. You can just walk onto the Cairns Esplanade which is the waterfront area of Cairns city. You’ll find excellent bike tracks, and walking tracks along the waterfront. There’s a beautiful lagoon down there with an infinity pool and a man-made beach. Access to all of this is free. If you feel like working out there are free fitness classes on the Esplanade as well. If you go to the Cairns City Council website you can check out the timetable. They’ve got everything from Zumba, Yoga, box-fit, beach volley ball and also aqua-aerobics.
Relax in The Gardens
Another good fun option is to head out to the Botanical Gardens which is about 4 ams north of the city. You can walk out or hire a push bike or go on a local bus. The Gardens offer access to two free rain forest walks. The Mount Whitfield Range has the red and blue arrow walk. There are two walk options – 1.5 km and 7 km respectively. That’s a lovely area to explore.
Soak up Sun at Tropical Beaches
Another great thing to do is go to one of the excellent tropical beaches. You can easily get there on the local bus and just head north. Specifically Palm Cove is very, very nice. That’s about 15 minutes on the local bus. Beach access is not good between November and March which is the wet season and when the stingers are about. That’s where the Cairns Lagoon is fantastic because it is access all year round and it is safe swimming.
Plenty To Eat
Grafton Street in Cairns, is full of excellent cafés. The best value one would be Lillypad. It’s really good food and there’s heaps of it. They can always share with a friend to keep the cost down and you will still walk out of there with a full tummy. If you like Asian food we have a arcade called Orchid Plaza. Upstairs there are many different Asian food outlets. Korea Korea is a fantastic choice if you like Korean food and again, really good value starting from about $11 for a main meal.
If you’d like to go out drinking or partying we recommend Gilligans. It’s is a really big bar and nightclub – probably the biggest club in Cairns. The Woolshed is also very popular with backpackers. There’s also a few pub crawls around Cairns. The Ultimate Party is the most popular and it goes out at night on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. You go in a big double decker London bus with the top cut off and they host you around about five different bars in Cairns. They have party games and lots of fun. If you’re going to go a bit more upmarket you can head down to the waterfront and visit the beautiful Salt House which is a combination of DJ or live music. Or you could head up to the marina and check out the Water Bar. It’s a very nice cocktail bar with great food as well.
Find A Bargain At The Markets
The markets are fun for hunting down bargains or feasting on tropical fruit. Check out Rusty’s Market which has a lot of the store owners offering samples of the beautiful tropical fruit and there’s a fantastic atmosphere there. These markets are great for people watching. That’s where you see a lot of the local characters of Cairns. These markets are on Friday, Saturday and Sunday from early morning until mid-afternoon. You’ve can also visit the Esplanade Markets every Sunday. They are arts and crafts markets.
Enjoy Cairns Festival
The Cairns Festival is held every year around August and September and features arts, crafts, music, food. There’s a lot of free events, paid events and a big fireworks display. It’s a really fun time, so if you are in town check out what’s on at the festival and have fun.
